Project Class: Build a FreeTouchDeck

In this class each student will build a fully functional FreeTouchDeck with the guidance of someone that has done it before and can help you navigate the sticky parts. All the parts and software will be ready to go as part of the class. No ordering your parts from China or Amazon and waiting 4-6 weeks for delivery. Everything is included in the class fee.

What is a FreeTouchDeck(FTD)? It’s a DIY (read: less expensive and more configurable) version of the Elgato Stream Deck mini. Generally it’s a small touch screen you can configure to have macros or special quick keys for your computer, tablet or even your phone. Ever use some software and wish you could setup a bunch of key strokes to get to a feature or function as a single key press? Well that is exactly what this does without affecting your existing keyboard keys.

An Elgato Steam Deck mini costs from $60-$80 depending on where you buy. This class is $45 and you not only go home with a fully functional FTD, you get a guide to help you build and configure it. Not to mention the skills you will learn and the satisfaction of building something yourself.

This is a 2 hour class/project build session. The first hour will be mostly physical assembly. You will solder a little as well as make all the connections for the FTD and place your electronics inside the provided case. Next we will learn how to properly setup the Arduino IDE to upload settings and data files needed for a fully operational FTD. From there we will move onto connecting it to your laptop using Bluetooth and ensuring you have everything you need to be successful in configuration and using it at home. Students will receive a simple-to-follow user manual/guide to set up and adjust the Free Touch deck. Additional quick tips and links to other useful resources like the Discord space where you can talk to the creator of the FTD will also be included in your user manual. These resources will ensure you get the most out of your new toy/tool.

A minimum of two registrants is required to hold the class. Work stations will be socially distanced and students are asked to wear a mask.
